How do I change
my MS-DOS prompt?
You
can add a custom message to the MS-DOS Prompt in Windows 3.1.
- In the Accessories program
group, double-click Notepad.
- From the File Menu, choose
Open to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root (\) directory.
- In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
type SET WINPMT=Windows Shell-$p$g and press ENTER.
Windows Shell is an appropriate message, reminding you that
you are running MS-DOS under Windows. However you can substitute any
message to appear with the command prompt. NOTE: This line of code
must appear before any command that launches Windows, such as Win
or Call Win.
- From the Notepad File menu,
choose Save. To exit Windows, from the Program Manager File menu,
choose Exit Windows and click OK.
- Reboot your system by
pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE, or by turning your computer off and then
on again.
