How do I change my MS-DOS prompt?

You can add a custom message to the MS-DOS Prompt in Windows 3.1.

  1. In the Accessories program group, double-click Notepad.
  2. From the File Menu, choose Open to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root (\) directory.
  3. In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, type SET WINPMT=Windows Shell-$p$g and press ENTER. Windows Shell is an appropriate message, reminding you that you are running MS-DOS under Windows. However you can substitute any message to appear with the command prompt. NOTE: This line of code must appear before any command that launches Windows, such as Win or Call Win.
  4. From the Notepad File menu, choose Save. To exit Windows, from the Program Manager File menu, choose Exit Windows and click OK.
  5. Reboot your system by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE, or by turning your computer off and then on again.
